4 Homesteaders You Should Follow

homesteaders to follow

Homesteading is more than just a hipster trend that has gained popularity in recent years. Rather, it’s a lifestyle that many have found to provide their lives with more substance and meaning for themselves as well as their families. Self-sufficiency is the name of the game when it comes to homesteading and it can become a part of your life no matter who you are or where you call home.

Whether you’ve been a homesteader for years or are looking to get started, there are blogs out there to provide you with tips and tricks that can ensure your success on the homestead front.  We’ve put together our personal favorites to get you started.

The Elliot Homestead

This sweet family of five has fully immersed themselves in the lifestyle of homesteading. The matriarch of the family, Shaye Elliot, is the driving force behind The Elliot Homestead blog. She’s quite unapologetic about the fact that they use old school methods like cloth diapers and hanging their laundry out on the line to dry. You’ll find everything from touching stories about the loss of a beloved family pet to recipes and meal planning. While this blog is certainly geared more towards families, the information gleaned would be beneficial to homesteaders of all walks of life.

Summers Acres

Not everyone has the ability or desire to fully commit to homestead life and that’s why we’re including the Summers Acres blog on this list of favorites. Jon and Ann work in the information technology industry, have five children, and recently moved into a farmhouse with 14 acres. They don’t consider themselves to be fanatics but have come to appreciate the simplicity of homesteading in regards to getting back to the self-sufficient days of old. You’ll be amused as well as educated as you follow along their quest to simpler living.

Voice from the Bush

In stark contrast to the Summers Acres blog, the Voice from the Bush is presented by Linda and Charlie. They’ve been living the off-the-grid homesteading life for over 10 years. You’ll find information on smoking meats, wild foraging, and advocating for the preservation of the lands and waters on which they live. If you want a glimpse into the lives of true homesteaders, this is the blog for you.

Urban Homestead

Not everyone has the luxury of moving to the country or away from the big city, but that doesn’t disqualify them from becoming homesteaders. On Urban Homestead, the patriarch of the Dervaes family, Jules, along with his three grown children show how those living the city life can still enjoy the simple life. Although they reside on a small plot of land within a suburban area, they were still able to create an urban farm capable of producing 6000 pounds of organic food each year. If you’re a city dweller looking to reconnect to the simple country life, this blog proves that it is possible.

Hopefully you take a moment to check out each of the homesteading blogs we’ve included above.
